My training Break-Down:
CrossFit 6 days a week minimum, sometimes double WODs (Run training during Crossfit, a 6 miler a couple times a week as well) Just started swimming again with a Master's group composed of all Ironman athletes, Focusing on swimming a sub 1:00:00 Ironman.
Swimming: I feel most confident in my swim ability. Swam 3 miles yesterday in a killer workout. Felt great
Running: I can run a 5:35 mile and a 1:28:12 Half Marathon, I fall apart in a Full Marathon around mile 17
Biking: I really need to focus here, I did not do well on the bike last year in the Ironman.
Bench: I don't even know haven't tried in a long time.
Squat: 205
I did Fran Rx this morning in 9:01. Just sayin.
Yoga: I probably should be doing this
Nutrition: 100% Paleo, lots of fruits and veggies, mostly grilled chicken, lot of eggs, amino acid supplements, Protein shake after workouts drinking around 100oz of water a day, also did away with the fast food.
Already wrapped my mind around the Distance "thing" and
I'm gonna kick you in the do-worm.

Awesome article. I just did a practice swim today of the course we will be racing at IM Melbourne in two weeks, and had come away asking a few questions (like where should I start in the pack??). Your suggestion of asking a few people around you in the start is perfect. I'll let you know how it pans out!!

This is a great post! I also recommend swimming with a Master's program at least once a week (I do 3x in season). This way you a) learn how to swim with other people; b) you push yourself more than you would by yourself and get a great endurance base and c) you learn how to draft which can save those matchsticks. From masters, I know I can swim for at least 1-1/2 hours non-stop at a very strong pace and you need that for an Ironman as you know. And with that confidence you eliminate a lot of nerves and energy as you've well stated. During a session I'll swim anywhere from 2500-3000 yard and do a mixture of warm up, drills, speed work and distance. And most importantly, it's fun! Elizabeth

Agreed Iain, I was so prepared for the swim physically, I had done the distance in that same water just days before the event, in my wetsuit. I was more nervous about the bike than the swim, yet in that mass of people, for a fleeting moment I looked over at the kayaks and thought about bailing on the whole thing. Then 30 seconds later I was all smiles and had the warm and fuzzies. No way to describe it really, just something you have to experience.

Reading this reminded me of both how much I hate and love the swim, especially the start. It's an experience that just can't be replicated or explained but is such a rush!

The closest I've found to replicating it, however, is if you can get six people in a lane at the pool, start off from the wall in two blocks of three at the same time, then repeat on the way back so the three at the front on the first length are at the back on the second.

Obviously, make sure there's no-one coming the other way!
